“Consultation” – new bait, same trap The newest proposal from Washington D.C. to set up a “Consultation” platform to discuss relations between U.S. Federal Officials, Native Hawaiians and, possibly, a Native Hawaiian government, is the newest scam to put Hawaiians into the American Indian tribal-nation corral without actually saying so. They are avoiding the tribal nation term since we absolutely trashed that concept over the past 20 years. “Consultation” sounds good but is just another loaded term like “listening sessions” of the ‘DOI-rule-change’ of 2015… and the TMT “public input” of the past few years. With this scheme, whatever decisions the U.S. make, they can say native Hawaiians were “consulted”, implying that native Hawaiians approved. The U.S. continues to treat their 125-year-long illegal occupation of the Hawaiian Islands as a domestic, Native Hawaiian-American-Tribal problem, instead of an international dispute between sovereign nations. Any honest effort to settle the dispute requires the U.S. to speak with us on an equal level: sovereign nation to sovereign nation, not “consulting” with a bogus Native Hawaiian-American tribe. The illegal presence of the United States in the Hawaiian Islands is a gross international violation. It demands an international remedy. The only talks necessary are those to negotiate the peaceful, orderly withdrawal of the United States from the Hawaiian Islands; reparations to repair the damage; and the normalization and resumption of friendly relations. I say, sure go ahead and hold these “consultations”. They will provide excellent opportunities to vent and scold these American government “listeners.” Weʻve gotten very good at it. As long as we do not fool ourselves into thinking these “consultations” are legally binding or will make any substantive difference; and as long as we reserve our rights and speak as Hawaiian nationals, not Native (U.S.) Hawaiians; and as long as we address the real elephant in the room, the illegal U.S. presence in the Hawaiian Islands; and as long as we maintain Kapu Aloha... this could be fun! --------- Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. Burning the Papal Bulls, Not Just Symbolically Every year at this time, while the U.S. celebrates Columbus’/ Discoverers’/Indigenous Peoples’… Day, we ask people to hold a ceremony called, The Burning of the Papal Bulls, to reject colonialism. The "Papal Bulls” were edicts issued by several Roman Catholic popes, that set in motion 600 years of colonialism, the forceful spread of western civilization, religion and culture, often resulting in atrocities against native peoples. This included the violent taking of lands (even whole continents), displacement, genocide, the rampant plundering of resources, and wanton environmental destruction. Today, colonial attitudes and practices still dominate the world’s culture, economy, and politics. Like it or not, colonial doctrines continue to drive the mechanisms of global society. Much of today’s civil unrest is pushback against the tyranny of nearly 600 years of colonialism. In December 2020, the United Nations (a club consisting of colonial countries and their former colonies) issued a declaration for 2021-2030 as the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism. Wow! Sounds great! The UN says it wants to eradicate colonialism! But wait! What’s this? Fourth decade? What happened in the first three decades? Sadly, nothing! Like the infamous 1993 U.S. Apology for the taking of Hawaii, the previous three UN declarations to end colonialism, ended up as just lip service. However… this time… something is stirring. Last year, 2021 the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva adopted a resolution A/48/7 –titled, “the negative legacies of colonialism on the enjoyment of human rights.” And rather than let it sit on the shelf, just last week, the Council, at the UN’s Palais des Nations, Geneva, conducted a special panel discussion on the matter. I was there in the main assembly hall for that session. Statements by the member states, experts and civil society were impressive in their unequivocal condemnation of colonialism and its continuing negative effects. The cry was loud and clear: Colonialism must end! Coupled with the General Assembly’s Fourth Declaration for the eradication of colonialism, and a recent assertion by the Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, this opens the door to jumpstart and seriously overhaul the UN’s broken-down decolonization process. If this is pushed, it could give a tremendous boost to the many peoples and nations that had fallen by the wayside when freedom was being dispensed. It can also correct the 1959 manipulation of the UN’s decolonization process that made Hawaii and Alaska captive “states” of America. --------- Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. Biden stumbles onto Ukraine-Hawaii parallel… I’ve been in New York observing the opening week of the United Nations General Assembly. Of all the speeches, the most intriguing (and spooky) was US President Joe Biden pontificating about the despicable acts of others without realizing that the US itself did/does the very same thing. Below (in black font) is, verbatim, the opening segment of remarks by US President Biden to the UN General Assembly just three days ago, regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In red font are the same remarks, adapted slightly, to fit what someone (Joe Blow) might say about the United States’ invasion of Hawaii, January 17, 1893… The parallel is uncanny… Joe Biden — “Let us speak plainly. A permanent member of the United Nations Security Council invaded its neighbor, [and] attempted to erase a sovereign state from the map. Joe Blow — Let us speak plainly. A prominent member of the Family of Nations (US) invaded its friend and neighbor (Hawaii) and proceeded to erase a sovereign state from the map. Joe Biden — “Russia has shamelessly violated the core tenets of the United Nations Charter — no more important than the clear prohibition against countries taking the territory of their neighbor by force. Joe Blow — The US has shamelessly violated the core tenets of the Law of Nations — no more important than the clear prohibition against countries taking the territory of their neighbor by force. Joe Biden — “Again, just today, President Putin has made overt nuclear threats against Europe and a reckless disregard for the responsibilities of the non-proliferation regime. Joe Blow — Again, even today, America’s overt military presence makes Hawaii a prime nuclear target with reckless disregard for the responsibilities of a peaceful regime. Joe Biden — “Now Russia is calling — calling up more soldiers to join the fight. And the Kremlin is organizing a sham referenda (sp) to try to annex parts of Ukraine, an extremely significant violation of the U.N. Charter. Joe Blow — Now the US is calling — calling up more devastating weapons with which to fight. And Washington organized a sham referendum to make Hawaii a US state, an extremely significant violation of International Law. Joe Biden — “This world should see these outrageous acts for what they are. Putin claims he had to act because Russia was threatened. But no one threatened Russia, and no one other than Russia sought conflict. Joe Blow — This world should see these outrageous acts for what they are. McKinley claimed he had to act because Spain (or Japan or China) was a threat to the US’ interests in the Pacific. But no one threatened the US, and no one other than the US sought conflict. Joe Biden — “This war is about extinguishing Ukraine’s right to exist as a state, plain and simple, and Ukraine’s right to exist as a people. Whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever you believe, that should not — that should make your blood run cold. Joe Blow — This occupation is about extinguishing Hawaii’s right to exist as a sovereign state, plain and simple, and Hawaii’s right to exist as a people. Whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever you believe, that should make your blood run cold. --------- So America (at least Joe Biden) does know it’s wrong to take over another country and try to obliterate its identity! And they know the remedy for such blatant violation is to stop doing it and pull out! Hey, that’s all we’re asking! --------- Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. Little White Lies I’ve mentioned before, this famous quote of South African anti-apartheid activist, Stephen Biko: “The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” If the oppressor can get those they are oppressing to believe certain lies, then the oppressor secures his control. And it’s not only big lies like “Hawaii was annexed” or “Hawaii is the 50th state of the U.S.” or Hawaiians are Americans”, but a lot of little “white lies” that constitute death by a thousand daily cuts. Every day, I still hear the automatic, knee-jerk use of the word, “mainland” when referring to the United States. This is one of the most insidious examples of group-conditioning. But there are many more, “colonial” white lies embedded in our sub-conscious intended to erase and replace our true identity with a foreign one. We may say “We are not American!” and not realize our minds are still caught in the lie of the American dream (or nightmare rat-race) where the prime objective in life is to accumulate a lot of money and power. We know the drill: we can be happy if we get jobs so we can earn money so we can get a place for our family, and buy food imported from “the mainland”, and smile at the tourists, because their money provides the money for our jobs, so we can get a place... A couple weeks ago, there was a news article about a “shocking” decline in enrollment of Hawaiian students at the University of Hawaii. While I believe higher education is a good thing and Hawaiians have made huge strides because of it, the knee-jerk reaction was to imply the decline of Hawaiian student enrollment as an alarming and tragic trend. But did anyone stop to think that maybe some of our young Hawaiians don’t see the track of Western higher education for economic success in the colonizers world as something they should blindly pursue? Especially since believing the “white lies” over and over have led to more disenfranchisement, more poverty, more houselessness, more frustration and despair for Hawaiians… The hundred thirty year long and painful journey from the “overthrow”, to ”annexation”, to “statehood”, to the Koko Head evictions, to the protests at Kalama Valley, Kaho’olawe, Waiahole-Waikane, Hilo Airport, etc., etc. to OHA, to UH Hawaiian Studies, to the “sovereignty movement”, to the “independence movement”, to more aloha ʻāina cofrontations, more evictions, more arrests and incarcerations… culminating in Kū Kiaʻi Mauna and the rise of the Lāhui... has been a journey of separating the lies from the truth. Yes, there are many benefits from the Western ways we can use, but to really free our nation, we have to free ourselves of the oppressor’s mindset, we have to think clearly for ourselves and apply our ways to how we want to live. We must be guided by the ways and core values of our kūpuna... aloha ke Akua, aloha ʻāina, mālama pono, kōkua, lōkahi, and so forth. Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. Hauoli Lā Hānau Liliʻuokalani Next Friday, September 2nd, we will celebrate the 184th birthday of our extraordinary Queen Liliʻuokalani. Not only was she the beloved, compassionate, courageous and wise Mōʻī of the Hawaiian Kingdom, she set the example for non-violent resistance later adopted by world-changers, Mahatma Ghandi, Rev. Martin Luther King and others... including todayʻs kiaʻi Hawaiʻi. When faced with the certainty of bloodshed in repelling the U.S. invasion, she chose to seek a peaceful, diplomatic remedy, temporarily yielding (not surrendering) her authority to the United States (not the traitors). Even though her diplomatic protest was acknowledged and honored by U.S. President Cleveland, “the swamp” in D.C. ignored it and conspired with the insurgents to annex the Hawaiian Islands. The showdown came in 1897 when President McKinley, a fervent supporter of American expansion, signed a treaty to annex Hawaii and the U.S. Senate sought to fast-track ratification of the treaty. In an unprecedented, masterful move, Mōʻī Liliʻuokalani spent a year in Washington, D.C. to personally lobby against annexation, and with strong support of the Kūʻe Petition, defeated the ratification of the McKinley treaty. But what can you do when a country as powerful as the United States cheats? First through the unlawful 1893 aggression to force regime change; then the seizure of Hawaii through a bogus domestic congressional resolution and the pretense of fighting a war against Spain in the Pacific. How did our Queen deal with such flagrant corruption, injustice and mind-boggling cheating of international law? Not to mention the deep personal disappointment in not being able as Mōʻī to protect and save her people and the lāhui from being taken over by the betrayal of a foreign power that was once a trusted best friend, that pretended to stand for all the noble ideals of fairness, freedom and democratic self-government. She spent many hours in prayer to Ke Akua for strength and wisdom, for compassion and forgiveness. She prayed for her people and did her best to protect them from harm. All of her actions — Yielding her authority (but not surrendering the nation) to keep her peole from being killed... Choosing diplomacy instead of war... “Abdicating” her throne (under duress and wrong identity) to save her subjects from being excecuted... Lobbying the U.S. Congress to defeat annexation... Filing lawsuits over the seizure of the “Crown Lands” (private lands) by the usurpers... Absorbing the blows of racist lies and character assasination against her by the American media... Forgiving her tormentors... Encouraging her people to be peaceful even under extreme provocation... Giving of her personal wealth to help the needy. All of her leadership by example preserved and defined not only the character of our nation, but the ashes from which to rise again. The life and mōhai aloha of our Mōʻī Liliʻuokalani, is what gives us the inspiration, the legal right and the kuleana to reactivate our nation. The Statehood Fraud We know that largely because we have exposed the lies and theft pertaining to the U.S.’ involvement with Hawaii, the U.S. State of Hawaii has abandoned any outward celebration of what should be its most important holiday — Admissions Day (Statehood Day) — August 19 this year. But there is another reason other than just embarrassment. It is the fear that celebrating “statehood” will spotlight one of the most flagrant hoaxes against not only Hawaii, but the entire international community. You see, in 1959 when the U.S. conducted the fake Hawaii statehood plebiscite, it did so under the guise of complying to its “sacred obligation” to the United Nations to conduct a referendum by which Hawaiians could determine for themselves their future political status. In 1946 when the United Nations was formed, the U.S. along with other colonial countries like Britain, France, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands…, submitted the names of their colonies or “dependent territories” to be “decolonized”. This meant the colonial powers were under an obligation to the UN to assist and provide the territories they were “administering” the opportunity to eventually choose for themselves whether they want to be an independent country or not. The UN placed a high priority on decolonization. In 1946 the United Nations started with 51 member countries. Today, there are 193 members. Roughly 100 of them came through utilizing the UN’s decolonization process. In 1946 the U.S. submitted Alaska, American Samoa, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to the list of “non-self-governing territories” to be decolonized under the UN’s process. Yes, technically Hawaii was not a “territory” of the United States (neither was Alaska) but no one, except the lone voice, aloha ʻāina kiaʻi, Kamokila Campbell, protested the travesty, and she was summarily ignored. The U.S. never intended to let go of Hawaii. So, in 1959, to make it appear to be a legitimate decolonization process, the U.S. conducted a fake referendum in Hawaii. Then, the U.S. told the UN that the outcome was, the people of Hawaii had consented to be integrated into the United States to become its 50th state. Unfortunately, the UN didn’t notice the U.S. had completely manipulated and subverted the decolonization process to capture Hawaii. The UN blindly accepted the United States’ report and deemed the political question of Hawaii was hereby settled: The Hawaiian Islands are an integral part of the U.S. But it’s not over! Fortunately, after years of work, we are on the brink of exposing what the U.S. did in manipulating the UN to be an accomplice to the “statehood” fraud. Important UN bodies, the Human Rights Council in October of 2021 and the Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination just two days ago, have finally responded favorably to our complaints and are opening the way to examine the UN’s role in enabling the United States’ fraud against Hawaii. The U.S. and the State of Hawaii has been downplaying the celebration of statehood for good reason… Hawaii is a Fake State! And the whole world is about to find out. [The same goes for Alaska. It too is a fake state for the same reasons. Mahalo nui to the native people of Alaska for their long-time partnership in pursuing this issue at the UN.] Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea 2022 TOMORROW, July 31, 2022 is the 179th Anniversary of the Hawaiian Kingdom’s first national holiday, Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea – Sovereignty Restoration Day. That’s when British Admiral Richard Thomas of the Royal Navy came to Honolulu to restore the Hawaiian Kingdom after one of his over-zealous captains, Lord George Paulet, had forcibly hijacked the Hawaiian Kingdom six months before. On that day of restoration, July 31, 1843, King Kamehameha III and the entire Kingdom began a celebration that lasted 10 days. The King proclaimed that henceforth, Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day) would be a holiday celebrated throughout the Realm. Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea was celebrated for 50 years until, in 1893, another surprise hijacking took place. This time it was a coup by 13 traitors backed by the U.S. foreign minister and the warship Boston. Like the one in 1843, this hijacking was also an unprovoked and unjustified rogue action. But this time, instead of returning the Kingdom to the rightful ruler, Queen Liliʻuokalani, the United States gradually took full control and never left! Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea and other Kingdom holidays were neglected. Compare how the two countries handled the situation when they found that their officials and armed forces had illegally hijacked the Hawaiian Islands. 1843 – The United Kingdom – The biggest colonial power in the world – Immediately after London learned of the wrongful taking of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Admiral Thomas was dispatched to Honolulu, to reign in its rogue captain, acknowledge the wrong, restore the Hawaiian Kingdom to King Kamehameha III, and resume friendly relations between the two kingdoms. 1893 – The United States – The champion for freedom and democracy – Knowing it violated and overthrew a peaceful, friendly, recognized sovereign nation with whom it had multiple treaties, the U.S. admitted it had committed a wrongful act, but did nothing to repair the wrong. Instead, five years later, the U.S. staged a fake annexation of the Hawaiian Islands, took full control, and has been holding Hawaii captive for the past 125 years! The Issue of Sovereignty When Hawaii was wrongfully seized by the rogue captain Paulet, the United Kingdom had not yet recognized the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign nation. (That took place four months later, on November 28, 1843.) Thus, Admiral Thomas’ act of restoration was defacto recognition and a sign of respect of the sovereignty the Hawaiian Kingdom. On the other hand, when Hawaii was wrongfully seized by the U.S. armed forces, the Hawaiian Kingdom was already a fully recognized sovereign nation and had been for 50 years! The Kingdom had treaties with dozens of bi-lateral and multi-lateral treaties — including five treaties with the USA. The Hawaiian Kingdom had over 130 diplomatic posts around the world conducting trade and involved in active discourse in international matters. The Hawaiian Kingdom had the best literacy rate in the world, and an enviable public education system. There was absolutely no way the United States could justify the invasion of Hawaii, and U.S. President Cleveland said so in his December 18, 1893 address to a joint session of Congress. Yet, even after knowing it was a rogue hijacking, U.S. officials played the racist/white supremacist card, portraying Queen Lili’uokalani and her Kingdom as some vague, backward, dark-skinned, savage nation that needed the U.S. to save and civilize them. This was still the false narrative in place 50 years ago when the sovereignty movement began with kūʻe actions to resist the foreign encroachment. In 1985 Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell and other Hawaiian patriots, restarted the celebration of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea. It gained momentum each year, and today is the biggest Kingdom celebration throughout the islands. Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Lā Kuʻokoʻa and other kingdom holidays eclipse the State of Hawaiiʻs key holidays. We know we are making progress when the State’s Admissions Day (Statehood Day) has been completely abandoned and instead, starting this year the "State of Hawaii" is celebrating our Hawaiian Kingdom holiday, Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea – Sovereignty Restoration Day, as an official State holiday. We have traversed the path from complete ignorance and denial to celebrating Sovereignty Restoration Day! The Hawaiian Kingdom is definitely alive and on the rise! Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. Our Best Interest... Youʻd be surprised to know how many countries at the United Nations empathize and agree with our quest to free Hawaiʻi from the United States. When the UN started in 1945, there were 51 independent member countries. Today there are 193! That means nearly three-fourths of the current UN became independent and gained membership through some form of struggle for liberation; many through a peaceful decolonization process, but many through armed conflict — some extremely violent and bloody. Thus, the great majority of the UN members understand what it means to struggle for, and finally gain, independence. So why don’t countries that empathize with us just recognize Hawaiʻi as an independent nation and expose the United States’ blatant ‘statehood’ scam? It’s surprisingly simple… self-preservation. About 10 years ago, I was chatting with a Carribean ambassador to the UN and he said to me: “Remember that every diplomat has been sent by his country to look after the best interests of his country”. A diplomats’ job is not only to pursue what will be good for his/her country, but they must do their utmost to avoid what could be harmful. Wow! That explains why it’s not all cut-and-dry, right or wrong. Decisions are made by the individual country based on how that decision will affect the country’s interests. At this point, any country that dares to profess Hawaiʻi is independent (even out of the noblest of intentions), would bring upon itself retaliation from the U.S. And the U.S. has abundantly demonstrated (ever since they grabbed Hawaiʻi in 1898) the extent it will go to have its way… invasion … regime change… denationalization… political suppression… economic bondage and so forth. A country may totally agree that our country was unlawfully usurped and is under belligerent occupation, but to challenge the U.S. directly on this matter would be suicidal. Over the past few years our discussion with countries has been, how can they help us at minimal risk to themselves? We have found a way… and are working on implementing a plan at the UN General Assembly. Since Hawaiʻi is not a member of that country club (and we’re not trying to become one) we are relying on its members to call on the General Assembly to conduct a procedural revue of a resolution the General Assembly itelf passed in 1959 that basically consigned the Hawaiian Islands to the United States. The purpose of the plan is to cause the UN General Assembly to discover that it made an error in accepting the U.S.’ report claiming the Hawaiian people had freely consented (through the Statehood Plebiscite) to become a “state” of the United States. And in discovering they made an error, the UN General Assembly would be required by its own rules, to rescind that 1959 resolution. Thus, the U.S. claim that Hawaiʻi is a state of the U.S. becomes null and void. And, by default, the Hawaiian Kingdom emerges as a sovereign, independent nation-state. Yes, that outcome would be in the best interest of Hawaiʻi, but it would also be in the best interest of the rest of the world... including (whether they appreciate it or not) the United States. Side Event for the United Nations Human Rights Council 50th Session 30 June 2022, 8:00 am, Geneva, Switzerland Zoom Link: https://bit.ly/UNHRC50_Colonialism Both the United Nations General Assembly and the Human Rights Council have adopted strong resolutions to eliminate colonialism. On 10 December 2020 the General Assembly adopted resolution 75/123, declaring the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism. On 8 October 2021, the Human Rights Council passed Resolution 48/7 calling attention to the Negative impact of the legacies of colonialism on the enjoyment of human rights. This panel discusses the anomaly that, despite declaring such noble intentions, colonialism persists around the globe and very little, if any concrete actions are being taken by the United Nations to free nations in captivity, or to end various forms of deleterious colonial practices.
